The Problem

Millennial and Gen-Z believe social media to be toxic and/or depressing. We want to create a social media app that uplifts Millennial and Gen Z users and build a strong sense of community that promotes the positivity of our well being. When Social was simple.

Our Solution

Creating a new social media app that focuses on making social media a better place again. RTRO will help Millennials and Zoomers build a strong positive sense of self and community, explore new interests, and express themselves creatively with throwback messaging and content.

Our Challenge

Our challenge was to bring back a social sphere inside of a diluted and pressing industry, using social media to combat the negatives of social media.

my role

As a UX/UI Design intern, I was able to take a hand into the initial explorations and phases of the app until going into development. Under the guidance of the lead Product Designer, Spencer Hill, I was able to learn and explore numerous UX concepts and visual brandings.

A New Social

RTRO is an outlet for creators looking to inspire and motivate their communities to positive connections and well-lived lives.

rtro's investment pitch deck was sent to potential investors, and is currently being put into works with product developers and engineers.

3 Core Features

This social media app introduces 3 distinct and fun concepts.

Our Approach

Our team approached using the double diamond strategy, where we approached with many concepts relating to our value proposition, before converging down into one.

Exploratory Research

"I've had it for 9 years. It makes me feel entertained and sad."

"Over 10 years. I have a love hate relationship."
Tester #111800992
"I've met a lot of cool and interesting people on it, although sometimes,
I see things that don't do my mental state much good. "

"Social media is a good distraction, but can also be a horrible place."

Research Synthesis

The overall exploration and observational research was substantial in identifying overall problems of users towards current day social media. The monopoly of social media conglomerates like Meta and Facebook has no doubt taken some toll on users.

How Might we...

help Zoomers intentionally share and authentically connect?

create healthier relationships with others without the negatives of current social media?

help users build a strong community reminiscent of the early days of technology?

Analyzing Similar Social Media Apps

We looked into different apps that supported user generated communities, understanding their advantages, pain points, and overall philosophy on its concept.

Onboarding Experience

I was tasked on conceptualizing the main ideas of the Onboarding experience. Our first ideation consisted of colorful, interactive experiences until funneling down into a simplistic, intuitive onboard flow.

- circles -

what are Circles?

Circles was a highlighted concept that allowed users to join, interact, and have fun with friends and family. With unique, distinct, and interactive features, circles allowed users to connect with others while promoting a positive environment.

Circle Features

Circle communities carry distinct features and implementations that allow for more fun and interactivity.

Exploring Circle Navigation

Circles became one of the prominent concepts for rtro. Therefore, exploring where and how this feature is conducted in the app user flow became important in order to provide the user its full attention.

Ideation 1
Users can cycle through circles seamlessly, with a hamburger menu that filters through items
Ideation 2
Full focus towards an individual circle
Highlighted Ideation
Circles are shown in a chat-room like manner while giving full focus

Mixtapes

One distinct concept that was pushed towards our MVP was mixtapes. This feature allowed users to compile songs of their choice, and compile them into a single message to share with their community.

I was tasked with exploring different ways to navigate and scroll through different mixtapes in each circle.

Voicemails

Users are able to spark conversations and send love using voice messages. Either individually or in their circles, rtro allowed fun, exciting, and personal voicemails to others in an engaging way.

Pros
Accessible and easy to listen/react to messages.
Options for interactivity (reacting, responding)
Cons
May be bland or too typical.
Could be too similar to actual chat feature.
Less unique.
Pros
Users can respond and react to voicemails.
Interactive and encourages responses.
Cons
Leaves less space for more options/features.
Could look ‘too modern’
Not as unique and deviate away from rtro feel.
Pros
More aesthetic, focuses more on experience.
Leaves opportunity for more microinteractions and aesthetic.
A more rtro feel.
Cons
Navigation could be confusing / unintuitive.
Confusing to navigate if more than 4 voicemails.

Capturing Eras of rtro

We explored various aesthetics of past eras to understand rtro's look and feel of our design brandings.

Testing Results

We showed our concept and pitch to 80 users on Maze and gathered feedback on many features of rtro. Users were mostly excited for circle's unique features, and rtro's core value towards mental health and upliftment.

Funneling and Exploring Possibilities

During the initial phases of this UX process, it was important for our team to explore various ways to understand rtro's values and goal direction. Because of our small initial team, it was important for us to ideate different concepts while aiming towards our fundamental goal: When Social Media was simple.

Creating Pitches to Users and Investors

During the earlier stages of rtro, I was given the opportunity to give support in the compilation of rtro's pitch deck towards investors and users. This was notable to obtaining understanding the business end of design, and gave thoughtful purpose in design decisions.
